Australia Court Slams Coles Over Price Inflation Tactics
Australia’s Federal Court declared that the supermarket chain Coles was guilty of misleading customers through fictitious “Down Down” offers. It has been established that Coles increased prices on several hundred products to then reduce them again, thus creating the illusion of bigger discounts than those that would have been offered under normal circumstances. In order for a discount to be considered valid, the court said, an item should be sold at a higher price for at least 12 weeks. Now, Coles faces hefty fines while Woolworths’ case remains pending.
